A Beer in Every Port

We always said that we'd like to have a beer or two in every port. I'll add my comments on the local brews and the pubs we happen to land in along the way. Once we get to the islands I might have to switch to rum. Sad, I know.

Vero Beach Florida
Mulligans Beach House Bar and Grille

While walking the beautiful beach in Vero we came across Mulligans. It was about time for a cold one after frying in the Sun for a few hours. We walked into the place off the beach and looked for a table with a view of the ocean. Unfortunately there was not a hostess outside and the wait staff ignored us. We walked through the place to the front door where the hostess took us back outside for a table with a view for one. Someone was going to have to have their back to the beach. We quickly changed tables after she left, which is wrong I know but what the hell. After we made ourselves comfortable we spied awesome little tiki hut tables in the sand, but it was too late to change as our waiter showed up. Doh.

We started the conversation off right and discussed local brews, of which they had several. Nice. Finally a place in Florida that served more than Bud Light. We asked about happy hour specials and were told that we would have to go inside to get the special pricing. What? And on top of that it only applied to Anheuser Bush products. So, if we wanted cheap tasteless beers in an air conditioned cave we were welcome to do so. No thanks. Give us the local brews. Deb didn't like the sound of the local IPA's but I tried a Due South that wasn't bad. Deb got a Red Stripe. Yawn.

The next round I tried the Funky Budda IPA which tasted like you ate the burning remnant of the last joint off your roach clip. Unless you are Cheech or Chong it's not a good taste. We bought a flatbread appetizer to wash away the taste of the Budda and I can say the app was nothing to write home about, but if i did I would say that it was bland and soggy.

The bill came and we saw that our beers were $6.50 a glass and the app was $18. Wow!

I can wrap up my opinion of Mulligans by saying "Nice view, but you're gonna pay for it."

Cocoa Florida
We dropped anchor in Cocoa Florida recently and went into town. We checked out a neat little historic area of a few blocks of shops and eateries. I finally spotted what appeared to be a British style Pub. Not waiting for Deb's hesitation I plunged inward.

The Dog and Bone Pub

Was the middle of a sunny day and the bar was dark as night with 90's metal music at high volume. Two guys plastered to the gills sat at one corner and at least seven tattooed young ladies from a 90's metal concert were downing shots and beers at the other end. The cool bartender welcomed us and poured a couple drafts. We decided one and done would be the case as we could not hear each other over the music and the barflys kept asking stupid questions and shaking hands every five minutes. We could have taken our beers outside I suppose.
Newcastle Brown and Smithwicks were consumed. No local beers on tap. It looks like it could be a rockin place at night.
If you like to party this could be a good place to do it in on a friday evening.

Ryan's Pub

Wanting to sit outside for a snack and a brew we found Ryan's had tables in the Sun. We had a brew and some fried zucchini watching cars run the stop sign. Typical beer menu. Bass and Guinness. We never got inside but it looked pretty crowded and many folks got takeout.

Cute town to stop in and some of the finer restaurants looked inviting but we're poor so we passed. Cocoa is a good place to drop anchor and stretch your legs.
